For almost 19 years, Katie has worked at Community Hospital North, When she first started, she was assigned to the post-surgical unit. She would go to each patient room with ice water, a warm washcloth and an engaging smile.
She was hired through Community Employment, and has worked in several areas of the hospital since joining the team.
Today, Katie works in the Medical Renal Oncology unit, where she replenishes supplies in patient rooms. It’s a job she’s proud to have. In fact, one morning as she was getting ready, she told her mom she couldn’t wait to get to work. When her mom asked why, Katie simply said, “This is what I was born to do.”
The patients Katie interacts with would agree. While no one wants to be in the hospital, patients always feel a little better after spending a few minutes talking with her.
When she’s not at work, Katie keeps a busy calendar that includes volunteering for the Noble Auxiliary, Down Syndrome Indiana and the Pediatric Genetic Medical Clinic and Neuro-developmental Pediatric Clinic at Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital of Ascension St. Vincent.
For her long-term contributions to the community, Down Syndrome Indiana presented Katie with its annual Star Award.
She was nominated by Dr. Luis Fernando Escobar, Medical Director of the Pediatric Genetic Medical Clinic and Neuro-developmental Pediatric Clinic. Each month, Katie meets with parents of children with Down syndrome to encourage them to have a positive outlook for their child’s future. She also helps parents and patients navigate the clinic by directing them to various appointments.
